Our History

A once-small firm founded in Luxembourg in May 1949, Quintet is today a leading European private bank that serves high net worth individuals and their families as well as a wide range of institutional and professional clients, including family offices, foundations and external asset managers.

Headquartered in Luxembourg and staffed by some 1,650 professionals, Quintet operates in more than 30 cities in six countries across Europe and the UK. In the Netherlands and the UK, Quintet’s roots go back more than two centuries. In Belgium and Germany, the firm has been in business for over 150 years.

This year, Quintet marks the 75th anniversary of its founding in Luxembourg. As a significant player in the Luxembourgish financial ecosystem, we proudly and actively contribute to industry associations such as ACA, ILA, LPEA, and ABBL.

1949 - The beginning

On May 23, 1949, Kredietbank Luxembourg opened its doors on Rue Notre Dame with a staff of five and a mission to support domestic industry, commerce and the public sector as part of the country’s much broader effort to spur post-war growth

1961 - First Bond Issue

In 1961, the bank issued the first international bond loan in “European Currency Units,” the precursor to the common currency.

1973 - A New Era

By the early 1970s, Kredietbank had become one of the leading eurobond issuers and had broken ground on its new 12-story headquarters on Boulevard Royal.

1981 - First ECU Loan Granted

KBL is at the forefront of the implementation of the ECU, a new European currency. It is the first bank to grant a loan in ECU, for an Italian telecommunications company

1980's - European Expansion

Starting in the 1980s, the Luxembourg-based bank began its geographic expansion, acquiring a stake in UK-headquartered Brown Shipley in 1986, then 100% of the company in 1992. Over the next decade – as the firm focused ever more sharply on private banking – it acquired historically important wealth managers in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Along the way, the bank established an arm dedicated to asset management activities and introduced another to meet the needs of institutional and professional clients.

Our 75th birthday

The years since then have been marked by further acquisitions and important mergers, powerful partnerships and strategic investments in the future, including the 2020 rebranding as “Quintet Private Bank” and launch of Quintet Danmark shortly afterwards. Along the way, the bank has made a sustained contribution to the local community, supporting a wide range of charitable causes and initiatives in the Grand Duchy.
